Former head of Spanish government, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero underlined on Monday that the autonomy plan presented a few years ago by Morocco is "an ambitious and reasonable solution" to resolve the Sahara issue.
"I believe that the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco remains an ambitious and reasonable solution" that guarantees the rights of the population, said Zapatero, who was the guest of a TV program on Spanish channel "La Sexta".
Negotiations "remain the only way" to reach a settlement to this issue away from violence and confrontation, he said.
Several Spanish political figures from different political parties, such as the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE, in power) and the Popular Party (PP, opposition) have underlined the legitimacy of the intervention of the Royal Armed Forces to secure the passage linking Morocco and Mauritania through the buffer zone of Guergarate.
They also denounced the actions of the Polisario, supported by Algeria, and its acts of provocation against Minurso.
