سادس شتنبر..مرور ربع قرن على توقيع اتفاق وقف إطلاق النار بين المغرب والبوليساريو

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the 1991 UN-brokered ceasefire agreement between Morocco and the polisario front.

The war took place between 1975 and 1991.

It is estimated that no less than 20000 people passed away on the Moroccan, Polisario, and Mauritanian sides during the war.

The separatist movement guerrilla’s war tactic was pretty successful towards the beginning of the war, until the idea of building a wall dawned on the late King Hassan II, proving to be a huge success as it brought to a halt point the polisario’s small-scale raids, ambushes and attacks.

The war ended in 1991 thanks to a UN brokered cease-fire.

A referendum on the region’s final status has been repeatedly postponed as Morocco and the Algeria-backed Polisario front did not reach an agreement on the conditions of the referendum.
