France Hails Appointment of Horst Köhler as UNSG Personal Envoy for Sahara

France lauded on Thursday the appointment of Horst Köhler as the UNSG Personal Envoy for the Sahara, assuring him of its full support in this mission.

In a statement issued by the French foreign ministry, France extended its best wishes of success to Köhler, noting that this former German president has a solid international and multilateral experience.

The same source underlined that France considers the autonomy plan submitted by Morocco in 2007 as a serious and credible basis for a negotiated solution.

It noted, in this regard, that it is important to revive as soon as possible the UN-led political process for a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution, as laid down in UNSC resolution 2351 on April 28, 2017.

UN Secretary General António Guterres had announced, on Wednesday in New York, the appointment of Horst Köhler as the UNSG Personal Envoy for the Sahara.

Köhler has over a 35-year experience in the governmental sector and international organizations, mainly as the president of the Federal Republic of Germany (2004-2010), a UN statement had said.
