Tindouf camps, ‘only refugee camps in the world’ where census has not been conducted, Omar Hilale

The Tindouf camps in Algeria are “the only refugee camps in the world where a census has not been conducted,” denounced, Tuesday in New York, Ambassador Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the UN, Omar Hilale.

In all the refugee camps around the world, there is a population census. The only refugee camps where a census has not been conducted are the Tindouf camps,” said Hilale during a press conference following the adoption by the UN Security Council of resolution 2152 renewing the mandate of MINURSO until April, 30, 2015.

“We are facing quite an anachronistic situation,” regretted the Moroccan diplomat, noting that according to the international law, a given population should be first identified and registered before finding a solution to the problem at hand.

In resolution 2152, the Security Council reiterated call for the consideration of the registration of refugees in the camps of Tindouf, and “invited” Algeria to make efforts in this regard.
