The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, asked the Security Council to urge the Polisario to withdraw from the Buffer Strip in Guergarat fully and unconditionally.
"I ask the Security Council to urge the Polisario to withdraw from the Buffer Strip in Guergarat fully and unconditionally," Guterres said in his report presented for review to the security council on Monday. The UN Chief said he remains "deeply concerned" by the continued presence of Polisario armed elements in this region and by the challenges this poses to the raison d’être of the Buffer Strip.
Guterres recognized that this situation risks a breakdown of the ceasefire regime and may have a "dangerous impact" on security and stability throughout the region.
"I intend to propose that the negotiating process be relaunched with a new dynamic and a new spirit that reflect the Council’s guidance, with the aim of reaching a mutually acceptable political solution," he pointed out.
